| In special recognition of Father Frank Hernandez’s contributions toward the successful debut of Rudolph Alvarado’s biography, The Untold Story of Joe Hernandez: The Voice of Santa Anita, Caballo Press and the book’s author are proud to announce that two dollars of every book sold through the end of the year (2008) will be donated to the Father Frank Hernandez Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was established at Jesuit High School in Sacramento, California, where Father Hernandez taught for over forty years. In praising the contributions made by Joe’s son to the project, Dr. Alvarado stated that “Father Hernandez was always there when I needed questions answered or a point clarified. He read early drafts and most importantly, he assisted me in researching his father’s life. His contributions to this project were immeasurable, I can think of no better way to recognize his assistance than by donating to the scholarship fund honoring his years of service to Jesuit High School.” | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Dr. Rudolph Alvarado’s compelling and in-depth biography captures the story of Joe Hernandez, a Mexican-American, who despite his ethnic background became thoroughbred horse racing’s greatest race caller at a time when most Mexicans and Mexican-Americans were being repatriated to Mexico due to America’s Great Depression. Alvarado’s biography uncovers the extent to which Hernandez went to fit into this Anglo-American dominated world, and reveals that Hernandez’s impact on the sport of thoroughbred horse racing went far beyond that of being a race caller. This is the first biography ever written about a Mexican-American involved in the sport of horse racing and the first to capture the social impact that a sport played in shaping the life of a Mexican-American. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
